Global Myanmar Volunteers is a non-profit organization which was established in early March 2021 . We are a group of volunteers from across Europe who dedicated ourselves to help Myanmar people in their fight for freedom and justice. We support the civilians, revolutionists and victims with necessities and advocate the international community.
We envision Myanmar as a federal democratic, peaceful and developed nation where there is equality, dignity, security, opportunities, hope and inclusiveness for all ethnic groups.
We provide assistance to people based on how big and urgent their needs are, and on our ability to directly reach them, regardless of their race, religion, sexuality or age. Our beneficiaries include refugees, civil servants, poor and vulnerable population.
Military’s airstrikes to ethnic villages as retaliation and the fights between them and the ethnic armed groups killed a number of villagers and injured many others. Thousands of ethnic people lost their homes and properties and they have to flee to safer places such as into the deeper forests or to the neighboring countries. Karen people who sought refuge in Thailand were turned back by their authorities. GMV supported healthcare materials, food, tarpaulin and raincoats for Kayin and Kachin refugees through our direct contact.
Military shoots live ammunition, use snipers, bombs, and even fighter jets against peaceful protesters, civil servants participating in civil disobedience movement and even those who are just staying in their homes. Until now, at least 580 people were killed and thousands injured. Those who injured are mostly due to gunshots or brutal torturing. We supported treatment costs to some injured people who need help.
Military cut internet connections so that they can implement as much atrocities as they want without the knowledge international community. We tried to support simcards from Thailand but the roaming was cut out from Myanmar side. There was no other sim card option to help in this matter for the time being. As such, we are trying to advocate and reach out to the internet giants to help.
The majority of civil servants and private workers participate in the CDM movement, making the military unable to run the country. During 2 months since the coup, no ministry has been able to operate. Participation in the CDM movement comes with a great risk for the participants in safety and security, economy, job safety, shelter. We provided salaries and support for food to those who cannot get access to CRPH’s CDM support.
GMV budget started with the contribution of the 13 members. And then, we collected donations from families and friends. Later, we spread the information about our activities to a wider community, also set up a Go Fund Me page to get more funding. Within one month, we have been able to directly support EUR 22000 worth of money and materials to Myanmar people.
GMV members conducted petitions sent call-for-action letters and conducted meetings with the parliamentarians, embassies, peace organizations, religious organizations, ministry of foreign affairs, prime ministers, and other actors from respective countries.
GMV members organized and participated in protests, talk programs, distribution of informational materials, news interviews and actively distribute information about what is happening in Myanmar in their community and network.
